A rare treat is number 27 Alfred Place. Built in the early 1800's, this cottage was once an alehouse. Unlike a traditional public house, you couldn't go inside but instead served through a window on the side of the building in Warwick Road. Yes, that little arched one with the decorative lighthouse.
A past owner of the building recalled that the small window inside had a built-in drawer to hold change and when she asked about it the story emerged that it used to be a Ale House.
We don't know if this building preceded the Egremont pub and brewery up the road.
