Structurally, this rather grand building forms the southern end of the Chatsworth Hotel built around 1807.

The ground floor on the seafront side was originally the Steyne Lounge bar, taking its name from the adjacent Steyne gardens. It was licensed to Boscoe Malone in the 1960s and later renamed The waterfront in 2001. Some time later it was to become the Inn on the Prom.

Today it  no longer serves as a pub.

I do have some vague memories when it was the Inn on the Prom, mostly to see local bands playing. I recall that the toilets were downstairs at cellar level and a long curving staircase took you there.

Known Landlords

In the early 1960s my mate Frank Mitchell and me would, once a week, visit the Steyne pub (as we knew it then) and have a few beers. The place at that time was run by a man called Larry Prince and his wife. I can remember a barman named Kim and a very attractive young bar lady by the name of Brenda.

Anyway, what attracted us to the Steyne initially was the live music. Larry Prince was a singer and would often grab the mic and give us a song.

Sometimes a guest entertainer would appear and add extra pleasure to our boozing. Those were the days, as my old dad used to say about the 1920s!
