THE GEORGE - GORING ROAD - 1935

To me, its always a little sad when a pub loses its identity and becomes known only by a brand name. For many this building will forever be the George V. (For the younger amongst us, that's George the Fifth)

Planned in 1931, a new pub to be called the Elm Tree Hotel was to be sited at the junction of Goring road and George V Avenue.

It was built around 1935 and opened in time for King George's Jubilee, hence the name change. It was positioned to make the most of the growing population seeking housing outside the town and to catch travellers coming in. The new entrance was added in 1990.

Latest 'old' picture of the George taken a couple of years after the one above. (there's an extra lamp post).

A rare find indeed. The George the V before it was built, or rather the plot of land acquired. Special thanks to John Cox of Bygone Worthing Face book Group.

John Lisher submitted some useful information about the Clifton Pub but had this snippet about one of the Georges landlords:

During the 1970s one of the landlords was a Leigh Dilley, whose wife sadly died at the pub. After he left The George he stayed in the pub game but also appeared in the film The Eagle Has Landed playing Winston Churchill in a non speaking role, hence his name does not appear on the credits. To my knowledge his last known whereabouts was The Crown and Anchor in Brighton, where he used to entertain customers with his Churchill impressions.
