Wandering Goose - 18a Marine Parade - 2013

Now just the Goose

This seafront building dates back to the early 1800s and until recently had been a Thai Restaurant and before that, the Sunshine Bar - part of the Steyne /Chatsworth hotel.

Situated on the seafront to the right of the Dome cinema, The building, now painted a dark shade of matt green, is 'The Wandering Goose' since abbreviated to just 'Goose', was owned and run by Nathan Wright, former landlord of 'The Geese Have Gone Over The Water' in Brighton, The Goose is a real ale and craft beer pub. The growing trend towards micro breweries, and real ale only outlets, have created a niche in the market, offering the drinking public a wider choice of specialist brews.

The Sunshine Bar before it became a Thai restaurant, and finally the Goose as we know it today. Information from Stuart Elms and Michael Clinch (MD of the Chatsworth Hotel) confirmed that the bar was part of the adjacent hotel at one time, forming one of its three bars.

You can still see the elevated covered walkway that joined the two buildings

The interior, at the time of writing, was divided into two sections. The front door opens up into a reasonably spacious vestibule with seafront views.

The bar itself is set on a lower level in a larger, painted, wood-panelled room with overhead skylight. Fixtures and fittings include a run of reclaimed cinema seats. Functional wooden benches and tables are predominant and help towards keeping the atmosphere light and warming.

A large, south-facing, outside seating area also features these over-sized benches.

The initial mantra was aimed squarely at real ales and craft beers, pleased to say that has not only
been kept but elaborated on. A diverse collection of beers to suit every possible taste seems to
live here, and is strongly promoted. We're not a review site but note special qualities.
