Although seen primarily as a
restaurant, it does have a bar. Formally farm buildings known as
North Barn, it was converted in the late 1990s.
It didn't open as the Swallows Return until
2003.
Following a refit after closing on the 28th of February 2019,
Swallows Return reopened on the 8th of March with a "cosy new look
to reflect its rural charm and rustic character." |

From a local business newspaper 2: A new
pub is
about to open in Littlehampton Road, Worthing, and
will bring
40 new jobs to the area. "It's to
be called the Swallow's Return and spokesman Mark Bond believes the
inn will be a big asset to the area." |
He
said, "When the building is complete, it will sit comfortably in
Worthing as if it had always been there., and we hope its atmosphere
and charm will grow naturally as guest contribute to its own
distinctive identity.
Our aim is to provide an
element that is so often missing from the usual dining out scene;
restaurant-quality food and service, to be enjoyed in the quite
relaxed surroundings of a British inn, complete with real log
fires." |
November 2003:
Staff at the Swallows Return welcomed special guests earlier this
month to celebrate the pub's opening and pay tribute to its
namesake.
Worthing Mayor, James Doyle, came along to mark the official
unveiling. During restoration, swallows were found nesting, and work
had to be delayed until the birds had flown south for the winter. To
mark the opening, landlord Doug Watson and Adrian Thomas from the
RSPB, put up several special bird boxes to encourage swallows to
return to the inn and ensure they have somewhere to rest. |
Also attending
the event was Mrs Rose Longhurst, winner of Doug's appeal for
history surrounding the Inn. Mrs Longhurst came forward with
information and photographs of her grandparents, who lived at the
building many years ago when it was North Barn Farm. |
