Signal Post - 79 Rowlands Road - 2023

Opening in August, The Signal Post was the inspiration of Joel & Fleur Penny, who some may know from their interest in the New Amsterdam (The Swan). The Signal Post aims to be a different venture, not quite a wine bar,  Tapas or Bistro, but an informal collective of all, casual and relaxed being the watchword. There will be craft beer.

It's early days yet as we write this (July 2023) so it will take a while for it to settle into its place. Currently, Joel, Fleur, and friends are getting on with it, scraping back the old paint and removing the plaster down to the original brickwork of what most remember as betting shop owned by Ladbrooks but back in 1926, it was the National Provincial Bank. Evidence remains!

The bank Vault. The vault itself was a large square brick structure within the basement with a presumably concrete roof.

The image left, shows where the old vault door would have been (right of the shelving). Note  large chunks of the wall on each side of the doorway had to be chiselled away to remove the reinforced frame and lock keeps.

This would prove to be a good place for the barrels and pipes whilst the cooler remains outside.

As with all new ventures in the catering and beverage trade, it takes a little while to find its identity,
the signal post seems to have solved that.
