Old House at Home -
77 Broadwater Street East - 1832
The original Old House at Home
in Broadwater.
The building began as a beer
house and didn't adopt the name until around 1901. The picture left
shows Alice Margaret Guiel, daughter of George Guiel (foreground)
and Elizabeth Smith Guiel, George's wife
It may be considered an unusual name for a pub, but it's was a
popular one. It is said to be based on a Victorian song of that
title.
A view looking east, which
almost obscures the building except for the extension that meets the
road edge, and a prominent sign.
The building lettering displays the sale of Ales and Stouts from the
local Chapman brewery in Worthing.
1929
Plans for the rebuild. I think the Public Bar
was a new extension whilst the rest of the pub remained on its
original 1800s footprint. We notice the clever use of the bar, a
single place to serve both bars and the off-licence.
1953
Our thanks to Peter Butler for
this picture. Peter's Grandfather Bill Bayley is positioned bottom
right, also Hilda and Harold Colbourne.
Can you identify anyone else?
Notice how everyman wore a
jacket and often a tie too, High contrast to today's drinkers.
