Norfolk - Chapel Road - 1850 to 2005

We believe this was the original building constructed in 1850, but the picture itself is turn of the century.

Built in 1850, it would have been one of the first pubs to be seen entering Worthing from the north via Broadwater. In its latter years, it has traded under various names including: Flappers (1989), Space Bar, Area 51 (1991), MIB, and 3TO (2002). 3TO stood for THIS THAT & THE OTHER. The building was demolished in 2005/6 and replaced with a retail unit and flats.

Right, a last look before its eventual demise in 2005.

1950s

We are grateful to Jan and Vince Flowers for the picture above. Dated around 1950,
it shows family and friends enjoying an evening at the Norfolk. So far, all but two
have been named. Are you there, or do you know who's not identified?

Above: This picture of a woman and child was taken
in the 1950s. The woman is Joan Morley, and the
young girl (a cousin) is Carol Morley. Our thanks to Sharon de Coursy for the photograph. Sharon is the daughter of Joan.

Russell Wainscote: Russell ran the Norfolk in the 1960's. he used to play professional football for Leeds United from 1925 to 1931, then joined Hull for two years. He made one appearance for England in 1929.

1980s

A rare close-up of the Art Deco style 'flappers' girl that used to adorn the parapet above the entrance of Flappers, a themed 1940s pub, restaurant, and club.

The man is possibly Alan Epps, who was the landlord around that period.

We've no idea what happened to her.
