This site
doesn't feature breweries, yet! However, the Montague Brewery had an
outlet in the main thoroughfare of Montague Street itself. Above
were the offices, and the brewery itself was located behind them.
The image on the left (superimposed) shows that it did have a street
frontage, or shop window. It would be reasonable to assume it was a
beer shop, open to passing trade and the drinking classes.
We know the
building dated from 1843 at least. |
Right: A
slightly updated picture shows the building was demolished and
replaced with the less interesting brick structure.
Today the
building on its left, Geering's the butcher, has also gone, replaced
with a large glass fronted construction containing 3 non-related
commercial outlets.
We are given
to understand the brewery closed at about the time of WWI and
demolished in 1969. |
