This isn't so much the story
of the pub, but of John Bachtiger, whose initials adorn the front of the
building.
Originally
the Ocean Club, a venue for young teens with dances and events,
complete with a proper sprung dance floor. It was purchased in 1966 by Mr Bachtiger who
was later joined by John McGuckin. The pair then went on to buy the
Golden Key Night Club, refitted and renamed the Carioca.
At some point the Ocean Club was renamed
Caroline's, run of course by Mr Bachtiger's wife Caroline.
Unfortunately we don't have the dates for this.
Roger Clocke informs us that they also had
dealings with the Tirola Bar, Royal Stewart and Bali-Hai in Bognor. |
