JB's - New Street - 1966

This isn't so much the story of the pub, but of John Bachtiger, whose initials adorn the front of the building.

Originally the Ocean Club, a venue for young teens with dances and events, complete with a proper sprung dance floor. It was purchased in 1966 by Mr Bachtiger who was later joined by John McGuckin. The pair then went on to buy the Golden Key Night Club, refitted and renamed the Carioca.

At some point the Ocean Club was renamed Caroline's, run of course by Mr Bachtiger's wife Caroline. Unfortunately we don't have the dates for this.

Roger Clocke informs us that they also had dealings with the Tirola Bar, Royal Stewart and Bali-Hai in Bognor.

1980s

In 1982 the lease was purchased by Brian Downs who ran the Central Hotel at the time. He applied for a change of use, from a club to a pub, to be called the Horn of Plenty. It opened in 1985, sadly Brian Downs, pictured below, died the following year.

In 1987 the Horn of plenty was bought by Mr Bachtiger, & Mr McGuckin and opened up under the name we know today, JB's.

It is perhaps ironic they should end up back at what used to be the Ocean Club, the very place they started. However in the meantime they had built up a small but sustainable empire.
