Gatsby's Bar - Berkley Hotel - Marine Parade - 1984 to ?

The Gatsby Bar opened within the Berkley Hotel in 1984 under the newly appointed  managership of Bruce Harley. It was set to be a 1920s style American speakeasy and promoted to be a 'Jet Set' meeting place.

In April 1986 the hotel came under new ownership, with Martin Boucher being placed in charge. The building had become a little shoddy over the years and it was time for a spruce up.

The Gatsby Bar was given a makeover, making it light and bright with 1930s decor. There was a public entrance during licensing hours and an internal one for guests after hours.

1986: The local newspaper reported that Gatsby Bar manager Geoff Cunningham faces a heavy fine if he continues to stage loud rock bands at the venue after complaints from local residents.

Cunningham said that sound proofing the bar would be too costly. The bands at that time could play up to six nights a week and had proved to be very popular. Now he says he will only hire acoustic duos. The bar had been a popular live music venue since 1985.

Mr Cunningham sent us the only picture he had of the inside of the bar, this is the band 'Switch'. We're sure there are other pictures that we would love to post.
