The Gatsby Bar opened within
the Berkley Hotel in 1984 under the newly appointed
managership of Bruce Harley. It was
set to be a 1920s style American speakeasy and promoted to be a 'Jet
Set' meeting place.
In April 1986 the hotel came
under new ownership, with Martin Boucher being placed in charge. The
building had become a little shoddy over the years and it was time
for a spruce up.
The Gatsby Bar was given a
makeover, making it light and bright with 1930s decor. There was a
public entrance during licensing hours and an internal one for
guests after hours. |
