Fisherman

It was with some reluctance that we've added the 'Fisherman' to the history of Worthing pubs. There had always been some confusion with this and the 'Running Horse' being not only in the same street but less than a hundred feet apart.

A while ago, a 1960s hand-drawn map by amateur historian Tony Jenkins came to light, clearly showing both pubs in situ in Paragon Street. Tony marked it as being in Marine Parade, and so we must assume it was part of one of the large Victorian seafront building, or perhaps in a cellar below, no one knows for sure.

We found this picture that shows Paragon Street almost opposite the Lido. We can see the Victorian building that Tony marked as 'The Fisherman' but we have to bear in mind with the limited space on his sketch map he may have been implying it was in that area, not necessarily that building. My eye is drawn to the white building behind.

In 'Glimpses of Old Worthing' by Edward Snewin and Henfrey Smail we discover this text:

The Fisherman at Paragon Buildings, where in 1837 an inquest was held on Mrs Frances Smith, a druggest, aged 101, at which a verdict was returned as 'Died by visitation of God'.
