Elm Tree Hotel |
|
|
 |
Don't look for
it, it's not there!
Situated, or not in this case, on
the corner of Wallace Avenue and Goring Road was a plot of land that
was destined to become the Elm Tree Hotel. A licence application was
applied for in advance of any structure being built.
This turned out to be the
second such application for that plot, which had also been refused.
There were many objections in spite of this becoming a growing
community. Because of the past objections, the proposal was to
construct the three storied building 55 feet way from the corner
with a grass plot placed in front. |

|
The idea was
to mitigate any danger a building like this might have on a a busy
corner. The bidders also said they would be happy to surrender the
licence of the Cannon Inn. Local property owners objected on the
ground of de-valuing their own property, and future plans were in
hand to extend a line of shops that were already in the area.
Colonel Harry
Sturgis, manager of the Kemp Town Brewery said that the land had
been bought by his company 10 years previously, with the intension
of building a house there, when the Bench saw fit to grant a
licence.
It was noted
that the site was scheduled under the Town Planning scheme as a
residential one. Application refused. |

This might go
some way to explaining why this particular corner remains open and
expansive. |

Possible location mentioned |
This wasn't the first attempt
to build a public house in the Elm Grove area. Back in 1912, a
licensing application was made by Lambert & Norris, brewers of
Arundel, to construct a building on the new housing estate at the
north west corner of Elm Grove.
A representative for the brewery
pointed out that since a license was granted for the Downview hotel
22 years ago, there had been no new licenses granted in this
direction at all.
The brewery would give an
undertaking if the application were granted, to surrender an old
1869 beerhouse - The Montague Brewery. The application was refused
on the grounds that as yet there had not been sufficient development
in that part to justify the application. |

We have to bear in mind that
Elm Grove used to extend down to the sea, and that the north west
corner may have been the same position as the Elm Grove Hotel above.
We have dismissed this as this
would make it mid Elm Grove, plus the mention of a new housing
estate, Bruce Avenue area we think as it was undeveloped at that
time. We would not call any part of Goring Road an estate. Plus the
mention of the Downview, which was more or less on the same road as
the proposal. We could be wrong of course! |

We have heard many rumours of
a pub, or two as it would turn out, being planed for this area but
details were at best vague. Thankfully we discovered printed records
of the licensing authorities hearing such applications and included
the positions of such intended structures. The maps here follow
those descriptions. |
