Downlands - Upper Brighton Road - 1939

Built in 1939 by Portsmouth and Brighton United Breweries, who later changed their name to 'Brickwoods' but ceased trading in 1983.

It was another classic Roadhouse design built specifically to capture the passing motorist. It was a Beefeater pub (Whitrbread Brewery) for a while but is
now part of the Toby Carvery chain.

The pub had been subject to an armed robbery. He had entered through an upstairs window at the back dressed in a brown jacket, pale green trousers, a red stocking over his head and pink rubber gloves on his hands. His weapon, a double barrelled shotgun.

The landlord suspected he had broken in when the pub was open and hid in the function room. The pub had just been locked up when he appeared. Approximately £1,000 was stolen from the safe for which the landlord had sensibly handed over the keys.
