DICE - 24/26 Portland Road - Closed July 2024

Cards and board games often feature in pubs, but to
have a dedicated game premises that sells beer is a
twist we hadn't met before. This was 'Dice' billed as "A friendly, all-inclusive board game lounge in the centre of Worthing"

We tend to think of it as a cafe/bar where you can have
a lot more fun than just looking at your phone.

The lounge was previously called 'Ransacked', which opened a month before the Covid pandemic started,
and proved to be its demise

Dice was an event business based in Portsmouth, attending conventions, which led to a Kickstarter project to fund their own sites. Three years later, they opened in Worthing, home of one of the directors.

It has a capacity of 80 covers over two floors. The ground floor is for casual and introductory gaming and upstairs is for dedicated game play such as Warhammer and RPGs and is ideal for longer sessions.

Table space was hired for an hourly fee, but they did supply the games (or you could bring your own). Rarities such as Othello and early versions of Risk were available

Back to the beers, they carried a small range of craft beers, tap or cans. Interestingly, the tap beers could be bought in two-thirds of a pint measures. It was the first time I'd seen this, but not the last.

They also did a range of cocktails and wine, catering for all tastes, including coffee for those less inclined.

Closure was due to rising 'costs and a tough trading environment' as quoted of their Facebook page.

We think it was a good effort at a difficult time, and notably more and more pubs now offer game playing of some sort. Things tend to go full circle over time.
