Why a hotel on a pub web site you may ask. Many hotels had bars open to non residents and the licensing laws for hotels were at times different to those of public houses. It also gave a bit of 'respectability' to having a drink with the fairer sex. Hotels would often cater to the more casual drinking classes by providing a separate building known as a 'shades' with its own landlord or manager, thus separating the 'working class' from the more affluent guests whilst retaining an income across the board. Built in 1865 and
called the 'Heene', it was later renamed the West Worthing Hotel. Around 1890 when Worthing and Heene
became one borough,
it then became the Burlington. |
