A rare treat is number 27
Alfred Place. Built in the
early 1800s, this cottage was once an
alehouse.
Unlike a traditional public house, you couldn't go
inside
but instead served through a window on the
side of the building in
Warwick Road. Yes, that little arched one with the decorative
lighthouse.
A past owner of the building recalled that the small window inside
had a built-in drawer to hold change,
and when she asked about it,
the story emerged
that it used to be an Ale House.
We don't know if this building preceded the Egremont pub and brewery
up the road. |
